MOTION PICTURE HISTORY, 84 YEARS AGO TODAY

The Jazz Singer, starring Al Jolson, is a 1927 musical film that was one of the
most significant developments in the history of motion pictures. It was the first
film with synchronized sequences which heralded what became known as the
“talkies” and the decline of the silent film era. The movie premiered on
October 6, 1927, at Warner Bros.’ flagship theater in New York City.  

ÒThe Jazz Singer,Ó the 1927 breakthrough film that featured synchronized sound in both musical numbers and talking segments, will be celebrated in an 80th anniversary screening on Friday, October 5, at 8 p.m. at the Academy of Motion Picture of Arts and SciencesÕ Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.            (October 6, 1906 – September 14, 1984)

Janet Gaynor was one of the most popular actresses of the silent film
era. In 1928  Gaynor became the first and only winner of the Academy
Award for Best Actress for her performances in three different films:
Seventh Heaven (1927), Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927) and
Street Angel (1928).  Her career continued with the advent of talking
pictures when she achieved success in the original version of A Star
Is Born
(1937).

ACTOR CHARLES NAPIER HAS DIED

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) — Character actor Charles Napier, whose
granite jaw and toothy grin earned him tough-guy roles in movies
like "Rambo: First Blood Part 2," has died in California at age 75.
