Mariner 4 was a space probe, launched from Cape Kennedy on Saturday, November 28, 1964. It performed the first successful flyby of the planet Mars, returning the first pictures of the Martian surface to Earth (as shown below). Communications with Mariner 4 were terminated on December 21, 1967.
