Over two million copies of the 78rpm single were sold, quickly
making Johnnie Ray a teen idol.

John Alvin Ray was born in Hopewell, Oregon, ten miles south of Dayton
and later moved with his parents to Portland, Oregon where he attended
High School. Ray died of liver failure in Los Angeles at the age of 63. He
was buried at Hopewell Cemetery in Oregon.

LAST RANGER LAUNCHED ON THIS DAY IN 1965

Ranger 9. was the last in a series of NASA’S unmanned lunar explorations. It was designed to reach the Moon and transmit high-resolution photographs of the lunar surface during the final minutes before impact. The spacecraft was equipped with
six vidicon cameras that transmitted high-quality television pictures of the Moon
prior to impact on the 24th of March.

role as James Bond in The Living Daylights (1987) and Licence to Kill
(1989). He also portrayed Rhett Butler in the television miniseries
Scarlett (1994).
