The Battle of the Alamo began on February 23, 1836 and was a turning point
during the
Texas Revolution. Following a 13-day siege, Mexican troops under President General Antonio López de Santa Anna launched an assault on the
Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar, modern-day San Antonio, Texas.

All of the
Texian defenders, including James Bowie and William B. Travis,
were killed by the end of the siege on March 6, 1836.

CANDY INTRODUCED ON THIS DAY IN 1896

tootsie roll vintage

Leo Hirschfeld, an Austrian immigrant to the U.S. started a candy
business in a small shop located in New York City. He named his
chocolate confection after the nickname of his daughter, Clara
“Tootsie” Hirschfeld.

By 1905, the company moved to a five-story factory and in 1917
the name was changed to The Sweets Company of America.

Trivia fact: Tootsie Rolls was the first penny candy to be individually
wrapped.
