FOLK SINGER HAS DIED AT 72

       Richard P. "Richie" Havens (January 21, 1941 – April 22, 2013)

(AP) – Richie Havens, who sang and strummed for a sea of people at Woodstock,
died this morning at his home in Jersey City. The singer’s agent confirmed he
had suffered a heart attack. A public memorial will be planned for a later date.

In June 2011, Campbell announced that he had been diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s disease six months earlier. He had been suffering from short-
term memory loss for years. He went on a final "Goodbye Tour" with his
last show on November 30, 2012 in Napa, California. Campbell sang
"Rhinestone Cowboy" as a goodbye at the 2012 Grammy Awards
which was held on February 12, 2012.

“Wichita Lineman” was written Jimmy Webb and reached #3 on the Billboard
Hot 100 chart and remained on the chart for 15 weeks. It also topped the
country music chart for two weeks, and the adult contemporary chart for
six weeks. Music journalist Stuart Maconie called it "the greatest pop song
ever composed”.

ROCK FILM RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1959

Go, Johnny Go!
was filmed in five days at the
Culver City, California studios
of Hal Roach Productions. It  was the only film appearance of Richie Valens,
who died
shortly after filming it in a plane crash, along with Buddy Holly and
The Big Bopper on February 3. The film was released later after Valens’
death.
