THE FIRST ROSE BOWL ON THIS DAY IN 1902

Rose-Bowl-1
The Rose Bowl stadium ,built in 1923, is located near the campus of Caltech

Originally titled the "Tournament East-West football game," the first Rose Bowl
was played on January 1, 1902 in Pasadena’s Tournament Park, starting the
tradition of New Year’s Day bowl games. It featured the University of Michigan representing the East and Stanford representing the West. The Michigan
Wolverines’ beat Stanford, 49-0. Fearing a lack of interest, the game wasn’t
played again until 1916, when it would become a yearly tradition.
