The first American bicycle race took place on Friday, May 24th, 1878 in Boston,
Massachusetts, it was not long before Chicago became a premier location for 
cycling races.

Standard Columbia bicycle, built by the Pope Manufacturing co.
of Hartford, Connecticut. Front-wheel diameters ranged from 42
to 58 inches and sold for around $95.
