CHIMP ORBITS EARTH ON THIS DAY IN 1961

Mercury-Atlas 5 was a unmanned spaceflight of the Mercury program. It
was launched on November 29, 1961 with
Enos the chimpanzee (above)
aboard. He was the second chimp in space.
The craft orbited the Earth
twice and splashed down about 200 miles
south of Bermuda. Enos died
of dysentery the following year on November 4th.
