THE MARQUAM BRIDGE UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN 1964.

The Marquam Bridge is a double-deck, steel-truss cantilever bridge that
carries
Interstate 5 traffic across the Willamette River south of downtown Portland, Oregon. It is the busiest bridge in Oregon, carrying 135,900 
vehicles a day as
of 2008. The upper deck carries northbound traffic;
the lower deck carries southbound traffic.


The bridge was designed and built by the
Oregon Department of
Transportation
 at a cost of $14 million. The lower southbound deck
was opened on October 4, 1966, and the upper northbound deck on
October 18, 1966. The Marquam was
the first Portland bridge to
undergo a
seismic retrofit in 1995.

Barry Alan Crompton Gibb was born in Douglas, Isle of Man.

Barry Gibb formed the disco and psychedelic rock band the Bee Gees
with his brothers Robin and Maurice. The group released such hits as
"Stayin’ Alive" and "How Deep is Your Love. He formed his first band,
The Rattlesnakes, in Manchester in 1955 and that band became The
Bee Gees. Along with Beatles members John Lennon and Paul
McCartney
, he shares the record for most consecutive Billboard
Hot 100 Number Ones as a writer with six.

SINGER BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1933

Conway Twitty (Harold Lloyd Jenkins) was born in  
Mississippi
. (September 1, 1933 – June 5, 1993)

Country superstar Conway Twitty recorded fifty-five singles
that reached #1, including "I Can’t Stop Loving You" and
"Hello Darlin.” He was inducted into both the Country Music
and Rockabilly Halls of Fame. Conway Twitty formed his first
singing group after his family moved to Helena, Arkansas.

He had the opportunity to play baseball professionally with
the Philadelphia Phillies, but was then drafted into the US
Army. He served in the Far East and organized a group
called The Cimmerons to entertain fellow GIs.
