The 1st Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion
Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), honored the best films of 1927 and
1928 and took place on May 16, 1929 during a private dinner held at the
Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles, California. AMPAS president
Douglas Fairbanks hosted the show.

First ever Oscars ceremony held in 1929
Only 270 guests attended the ceremony that took just 15 minutes.

    Cool here, to add that the 1929 Academy Awards “After Awards” party was held at the Mayfair Hotel on West 7th Street In downtown Los Angeles. I had the pleasure of working there in 1970 for a few months before moving on to the L.A. Hilton Hotel where I worked for several years before returning to Portland. Also of note,….now standing in the spot once occupied by the L.A. Hilton is the recently completed InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown. This 1,100 foot tall, 73 story hotel with 889 guest rooms is the tallest hotel west of the Mississippi!
