Samuel Jackson Snead (May 27, 1912 – May 23, 2002)

Sam Snead was a professional golfer who was one of the top players in
the world for most of four decades. Snead won a record 82
PGA Tour
events, including seven
majors. He never won the U.S. Open, though
he was runner-up four times.

Snead’s nickname was "Slammin’ Sammy", and he was admired by
many for having the so-called "perfect swing," He died in Hot Springs,
Virginia, in 2002 following complications from a
stroke, four days before
his 90th birthday.

FIRST STATE TO TAX GASOLINE IN 1919

The history of the gas tax began when Oregon state lawmakers were
looking for a way to fund road construction. They passed the nation’s
first per-gallon tax on gasoline in 1919. The first gasoline tax was one 
cent per gallon. The revenue was used for early road building projects 
including the Pacific Highway and the Columbia River Highway (below).

Gulf Oil was a major global oil company from the 1900s to 1980s.The eighth-largest American manufacturing company in 1941 and the ninth-largest in 1979, Gulf Oil
was one of the so-called Seven Sisters oil companies.The company was founded
in 1901 by William Larimer Mellon, SR. with headquarters in Framingham, PA. It 
ceased to exist as an independent company in 1985, when it merged with Standard
Oil of California.
