AAA (pronounced “triple A”), formerly known as the American Automobile
Association
(original logo shown above), is a federation of 51 independently
operated motor clubs throughout North America. It was founded in Chicago,
Illinois in response to a lack of roads and highways suitable for automobile
use.  Nine motor clubs with a total of 1,500 members joined together to
form the Triple-A. The AAA today has more than 51 million members. Its
national headquarters are in Heathrow, Florida. The first road maps were
published in 1905 and the printing of hotel guides began in 1917.
