The original Broadway production of The Sound of Music was a musical by
Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein ll. It starred Mary Martin
(shown above) and Theodore Bikel. It opened on November 16, 1959. The
musical has enjoyed many productions and revivals since then including
a 1965 film with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, which won
five Academy Awards. Many songs from the musical have become
standards, including the title song “The Sound of Music”.
