V-J Day ( Victory over Japan Day) was proclaimed a day after Japan agreed
to surrender unconditionally. The official United States celebration is not
on this date, however. V-J Day is instead celebrated on September 2, the
date of the formal signing of the surrender. A special day of remembrance
is marked in Japan and other countries on September 2.
