                  Phil Silvers (May 11, 1911 – November 1, 1985)

Silvers played the role of a military con man Sergeant Bilko on CBS-TV’s
sitcom The Phil Silvers Show (1955-1959). He began his entertainment
career at age eleven, singing in local theaters whenever projectors would
break. Phil Silvers has been called ‘The King of Chutzpah’.

On May 8, 1914, the U.S. Congress passed a law designating the second
Sunday in May as Mother’s Day and requesting a proclamation. The next
day, President
Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation declaring the first 
national Mother’s Day.

In 1934, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt approved this special stamp 
commemorating Mother’s Day.
