Robert James "Bob" Keeshan (June 27, 1927 – January 23, 2004)

Bob Keeshan is considered a pioneer in the formation of children’s
television programs. He played the title character of the iconic show
Captain Kangaroo during its 30-year run (1955-1984). Keeshan also
played the original “Clarabell the Clown” on the Howdy Doody show
from its debut in 1948 on NBC until he left in 1952.

FIRST FLIGHT ON THIS DAY IN 1942

On June 26th, 1942, a prototype of the Grumman F6F Hellcat took to the skies
for the first time. Initially conceived of as an improved version of the Grumman
F4F Wildcat which had been in service since the 1930s. The plane was designed
with its greatest opponent, the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero, in mind. 

The Hellcats were credited with destroying 5,223 aircraft while in service with the
U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and the Royal Navy‘s Fleet Air Arm. They remained
in service as late as 1954 as a night fighter.

Peter Lorre (László Löwenstein) (June 26, 1904 – March 23, 1964)

Character actor who played roles in Casablanca (1942) and The Maltese
Falcon (1941). At age 17, he began his acting career on stage, working
with famous artist and puppeteer Richard Teschner.
