LEGENDARY LAWMAN BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1837

`

James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok (May 27, 1837 – August 2, 1876)

Some of Hickok’s exploits as reported at the time were fictionalized, but his skills as
a gunfighter and gambler provided the basis for his enduring fame. He was relieved
of his duties as marshal less than two months after accidentally killing Deputy. This incident was one of a series of questionable shootings and claims of misconduct.
