PLATFORM LAUNCHED ON THIS DAY IN 2006

Twitter - Free social media icons

On July 15, 2006, the San Francisco-based podcasting company Odeo
officially releases Twttr—later changed to Twitter—its short messaging
service (SMS) for groups, to the public.

Born as a side project apart from Odeo’s main podcasting platform, the
free application allowed users to share short status updates with groups
of friends by sending one text message to a single number (“40404”).

Over the next few years, as Twttr became Twitter, the “microblogging”
service would explode in popularity, becoming one of the world’s
leading social networking platforms. Twitter was founded by Evan
Williams and another entrepreneur Noah Glass.

MOVEMENT MEETS FOR THE FIRST TIME

File:Niagara Movement delegates, Boston, Mass., 1907.png ...

Niagara Movement members began meeting on the Canadian side of the
Niagara Falls on this day in 1905. This all-African American group of
scholars, lawyers and businessmen came together for three days to
create what would soon become a powerful
post-slavery Black rights
organization. Although it
only lasted five years, the Niagara Movement
was an influential
precursor to the civil rights movement of the mid-20th
century.
