The American Civil War began on April 12, 1861, when
Confederate forces opened fire on the Union-held
Fort
Sumter
in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina.

Following a 34-hour bombardment, U.S. Major Robert
Anderson surrendered the fort, prompting President
Lincoln to call for 75,000 volunteers to suppress the
rebellion.
    
    
Thus four of the bloodiest years in American history
began.
