Mr. Potato Head became the first toy advertised on TV. The
original kit, which included almost 30-stick-on facial features,
sold for 98 cents—real spud not included.
The ad helped Mr. Potato Head sell more than 1 million units
its first year.
The original toy, designed by George Lerner, consisted of
plastic parts—faces, feet, and pipes—that users inserted
into a real potato (below).
