ORGANIZATION FOUNDED ON THIS DAY

American Red Cross - Home

In Washington, D.C., humanitarians nurse Clara Barton
and Adolphus Solomons founded the American National
Red Cross, an organization established to provide
humanitarian aid to victims of wars and natural
disasters in congruence with the International Red
Cross.

Known as the "Angel of the Battlefield" for her medical
work during the Civil War, Barton was inspired by the
global Red Cross movement she learned about while
visiting Europe.
