PORTLAND BRIDGE OPENED ON THIS DAY

       
      
    
 
   
Construction of the original Burnside drawbridge began
in November 1892, and opened on July 4, 1894, spanning 
the Willamette River in Portland,Oregon carrying Burnside
street traffic.

The second Burnside Bridge opened on May 28, 1926 at the
same site.

 
It was added to the
National Register of Historic Places in
November 2012.

 

The bridge was designed by Ira G. Hedrick and Robert E.
Kremers
, incorporating a lift mechanism designed by
Joseph Strauss.
