TODAY IS NATIONAL FLAG DAY

Celebrating Flag Day: Embracing the Pride and History

Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the United States flag
on June 14, 1777, when the Second Continental Congress
passed the Flag Resolution establishing 13 red and white
stripes and a union of 13 stars on a blue field, representing
the original 13 states

The idea of an annual observance was first promoted by Bernard
J. Cigrand, a Wisconsin schoolteacher, in 1885, who led his
students in the first formal celebration.

President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed June 14 as Flag
Day in 1916, and in 1949, Congress permanently established it as National Flag Day Although it is not a federal holiday, many states
and communities observe it with patriotic events.

On June 14, 1951, the U.S. Census Bureau dedicated UNIVAC,
the first commercially produced electronic digital computer in
the United States.

UNIVAC, which stood for Universal Automatic Computer, was
developed by a team of engineers led by J. Presper Eckert and
John Mauchly, makers of ENIAC, the first general-purpose
electronic digital computer.

These giant computers, which used thousands of vacuum tubes
for computation, were the forerunners of today’s computers.

A few months earlier, a general-purpose digital computer
called the
Ferranti Mark 1
, had been sold and delivered to
Manchester

University in the UK.
