CANNED MEAT TREAT INTRODUCED IN 1937

SPAM – History of Sorts

Spam, the processed canned meat product, was introduced in
the United States on July 5, 1937 by Hormel Foods Corporation
in Austin, Minnesota.

The idea came from Jay C. Hormel, the company’s son, as a way
to make use of surplus pork shoulder, a cut that didn’t sell well.

The product was designed to be affordable, easy to prepare, and
shelf-stable, making it ideal for families during the Great
Depression when refrigeration was not common in most
homes.
