July 3, 1863: On the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg,
Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s last attempt at
breaking the Union line ended in disastrous failure,
bringing the most decisive battle of the American Civil
War to an end.
The battle’s significance extended beyond military outcomes;
it inspired President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address
later that year, reaffirming the Union’s commitment to preserving
the nation and the principles of liberty American Battlefield Trust.
The battlefield later became a national cemetery, honoring the
soldiers who fell during this pivotal engagement.
