On July 30, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890 – 1969)
signed into law a joint resolution  that officially declared “In God
We Trust” the nation’s motto and mandated that it be printed in
capital letters on all U.S. paper currency.

The law also replaced the de facto motto E pluribus unum
(“Out of many, one”) in official use.
