Shortly after midnight on August 31, 1997, Diana, Princess of
Wales, affectionately known as Lady Di, was killed in a car
crash in Paris.

She was 36 year old at the time of her death. Her boyfriend,
the Egyptian-born socialite Dodi Fayed, and the driver of
the car, Henri Paul, died as well.

Princess Diana was one of the most popular public figures in
the world, and her death was met with a massive outpouring
of grief. 

Stacks of flowers, cards, candles and mementoes reached
some 30 feet from the palace’s gate.

Princess Diana’s funeral in London, on September 6, 1997,
was watched by more than 2 billion people.

U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Guion S. Bluford became
the first African American to travel into space when the space
shuttle Challenger lifted off on its third mission.

It was the first night launch of a space shuttle, and many
people stayed up late to watch the spacecraft roar up from
Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 2:32 a.m.

The Challenger spent six days in space, during which time
Bluford and his four fellow crew members launched a
communications satellite for the government of India,
made contact with an errant communications satellite,
conducted scientific experiments, and tested the shuttle’s
robotic arm.

Just before dawn on September 5, the shuttle landed at
Edwards Air Force Base in California, bringing an end to
the most flawless shuttle mission to that date.

Guion was born November 22, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Former Oregon State radio play-by-play announcer Darrell Aune
died this week at 83, a university spokesperson confirmed on
Friday.

Aune called OSU football and men’s basketball games from 1970-
99 and was sports director at KEX radio in Portland for 20 of those
years, during which he was named Oregon Sportscaster of the Year
12 times.

He later called football and basketball games for Linfield College, University of Portland men’s basketball and Western Oregon
University football, men’s and women’s basketball home games.
