The holiday was officially proclaimed by Congress in 1978
and signed into law by President Jimmy Carter to honor
grandparents and their contributions to families and
communities.

The forget-me-not flower is a traditional symbol of the day,
and people often celebrate by giving cards, gifts, or spending
quality time with their grandparents.
