Gilbert Hovey Grosvenor
(October 28, 1875 – February 4, 1966)
On this day in 1888, National Geographic published its first
issue, without photos.
The magazine had so few subscribers that editor Gilbert H.
Grosvenor personally addressed each copy and carries the
whole pile of them to the post office.
