The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals (ASPCA) was founded on April 10, 1866, in
New York City by philanthropist Henry Bergh, making
it the first humane society in North America.

It was incorporated to prevent animal cruelty, initially
focusing on protecting work horses and livestock.

Bergh’s dramatic street rescues of mistreated horses
and livestock served as a model for those trying to

immense sadness the death of its founder and president,
Madame Brigitte Bardot, a world-renowned actress and
singer, who chose to abandon her prestigious career to
dedicate her life and energy to animal welfare and her
foundation."

Bardot had been hospitalized briefly in late October at
Saint-Jean Hospital in Toulon, France where she
underwent a minor surgical procedure.

Bardot Bardot acted in 47 films, performed in several
musicals, and recorded more than 60 songs. She was
awarded the
Legion of Honor
(below) in 1985.

On August 21, 1980, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
(PETA) was incorporated by animal rights advocates Ingrid
Newkirk and Alex Pacheco. Rising from humble beginnings,
PETA would soon become the world’s foremost and most
controversial animal rights organization.
