Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009)

Called The King of Pop, Michael Jackson became the most successful
singer in American history for releasing award-winning hits like "Billie
Jean" and "Beat It." His 1982 album “Thriller” became the best-selling
album in history, winning thirteen Grammy Awards. He had thirteen #1 
songs on the Billboard charts.

NUMBER-ONE ON THIS DAY IN 1957

A 23 year old Debbie Reynolds recorded “Tammy” for the film "Tammy and
the Bachelor.” The song earned her a gold record and was the best-selling
single by a female vocalist in 1957. The song spent 23 weeks on the "Top
40" charts. It was number one for five weeks on the Billboard pop charts
and was nominated for a "Best Song" Academy Award in 1957, but lost to
"All The Way" from the film, "The Joker Is Wild."

NUMBER-ONE ON THIS DAY IN 1958

Italy’s leading male vocalist, Domenico Modugno, hit the top of the
Billboard Hot 100 chart with "Volare" (Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu). The
song would become the year’s best selling record and win three
Grammy Awards.

Mondugno died, at the age of 66, from a heart attack on the island of Lampedusa
(Sicily, Italy), while he was in his home by the sea.
