The career of English singer Petula Sally Olwen Clark has spanned
seven decades. She is best remembered for her 1965 #1 hit record
"Downtown".
This was The Fifth Dimension’s second number one record. The song was originally recorded as a private joke between group members Marilyn
McCoo and Billy Davis Jr., who were engaged at the time.
A Brooklyn native, Jay was the lead singer of the band “Jay and the Americans” in
the 1960s. The band had numerous hits including "Cara Mia", "Come a Little Bit
Closer", and "This Magic Moment".
As the result of mounting debts, Black sold his ownership of the name "Jay and the
Americans" to Sandy Deanne, Black’s former band mate and original member of
the group, for $100,000 in 2006. Black now performs solely under his stage name.
