"Let’s Get It On” remained at number one for two weeks, while
also remaining at the top of the Billboard Soul Singles chart for
eight weeks. The single was at that time Motown’s largest-selling
recording ever, selling over three million copies between 1973
and 1975. On June 25, 2007, it was certified platinum by the
Recording Industry Association of America.

NUMBER ONE ON THIS DAY IN 1964

house of the rising sun

"House of the Rising Sun" is recognized as one of the classics of the British
Invasion. It was the breakthrough hit for The Animals and became their
signature song. It ranked number 122 on Rolling Stone magazine’s 500
Greatest Songs of All Time list. It is also one to The Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. The RIAA placed it at
number 240 on their Songs of the Century list. In 1999 “House of the
Rising Sun” received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award.

THE NUMBER ONE HIT ON THIS DAY IN 1965

Help!" was both the title song for the 1965 film and its soundtrack album
(above). The single released from the album went to number one for three
weeks in both the United States and the United Kingdom. In2004, “Help!”
was listed at the number 29 spot on Rolling Stone’s “The 500 Greatest

"Alone Again (Naturally)" by Irish singer-songwriter Gilbert O’Sullivan, spent
a total of six weeks, non-consecutively, at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles
chart and the Easy Listening chart. In Casey Kasem’s American ‘Top 40 of the
1970s’, "Alone Again (Naturally)" ranked as the fifth most-popular song of the
decade. Debby Boone’s “You Light Up My Life” was #1.
