The Stamp Act was passed on this day in 1765. It was the first direct British tax on the American colonists. It was repealed on March 17,
1766.

On this day in 1987, a barge loaded with 32,000 tons of refuse left
Islip, NY, to find a place to unload. After being refused by several
states and three countries space was found back in Islip.

    
On NBC-TV, Tom Brokaw (above) called the barge the“homeless
garbage barge” from Islip, N.Y. On CBS-TV, Dan Rather called the
Mobro barge “the most-watched load of garbage in the memory
of man."

Tara Lipinski, at 14 years and 10 months, became the youngest
women’s world figure skating champion on this day in 1997.

Tara Kristen Lipinski will be 36 June 10.

The Beatles‘ first album, "Please Please Me," was released in the
U.K. on this day in 1963.

Andrew Lloyd Webber (Baron Lloyd-Webber) is 70 today.

Legendary showman and musical theatre impresario Andrew
Lloyd Webber is known for "Cats," "The Phantom of the Opera,"
and "Jesus Christ Superstar." He was honored with a star on
the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was also inducted into the
Songwriter’s Hall of Fame.

On this day in 1968, U.S. troops in Vietnam destroyed a village
consisting mostly of women and children. The event is known
as the My-Lai massacre.

William Laws Calley Jr. will be 75 in June.

Terry Anderson, an Associated Press newsman, was taken hostage
in Beirut on this day in 1985. He was released on December 4,1991.

Physicist Robert H. Goddard launched the first liquid-fuel rocket on
this day in 1926. Goddard is known as the father of modern rocketry.

Jerry Lewis (Joseph Levitch)  (March 16, 1926 – August 20, 2017)

Comedian, actor, and muscular dystrophy telethon host Jerry Lewis 
formed one of history’s greatest comedy teams with Dean Martin. He
received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Los Angeles Film
Critics Association, The American Comedy Awards, and the Venice
Film Festival.

Albert Einstein (March 14, 1879 – April 18, 1955) 

German-born theoretical physicist Albert Einstein 
developed the theory of relativity, one of the two
pillars of modern physics and is also known for its
influence on the philosophy of science. He received
the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his services to
theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery
of the law of the photoelectric effect".

Quincy Delight Jones Jr. is 85 years old today.

Quincy Jones is an Influential record producer, arranger, and
musician of many film scores, classic albums, and hit songs. He
is perhaps best known for producing multiple albums by the great
Michael Jackson, including 1982’s Thriller and 1987’s Bad. He was
inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.

Sir Michael Caine (Maurice Joseph Micklewhite Jr.)
is 85 years old today.

Across his fifty-year career,Michael Caine has had roles in The
Cider House Rules (1999), and The Italian Job (1969). He also

played Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred Pennyworth in The Dark
Knight Trilogy (2005 – 2012). He served in the Korean War for
the British Army and was knighted in 2000.

Eli Whitney received a patent for his cotton gin on this day in
1794.

On this day in 1995, American astronaut Norman Thagard (above)
became the first American to enter space aboard a Russian rocket.

Norman Earl Thagard will turn 75 July 3. He retired in 1996.

Folk singer James Taylor is known for hit songs like "You’ve Got a
Friend" and "Fire and Rain" and who was inducted into the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame. He has won five Grammy Awards, including
Album of the Year. He was once married to Carly Simon in 1972.

Sharon Yvonne Stone was born in Meadville, Pennsylvania. 

Actress Sharon Stone became famous for her role in the 1992 film Basic
Instinct. She also appeared in Martin Scorsese‘s Casino (1995). She won
a Golden Globe Award for her work in the movie.
