The City of Portland was a named passenger train on the Union
Pacific Railroad between Chicago, Illinois, and Portland, Oregon.
The first trip for the train left Portland on June 6, 1935.
The Silver Dome was the first modern dome.
On March 26, 1953, American medical researcher Dr. Jonas
Salk announced on a national radio program that he has
successfully tested a vaccine against poliomyelitis, the
virus that causes the crippling disease of polio.
In 1952—an epidemic year for polio—there were 58,000 new
cases reported in the United States, and more than 3,000
died from the disease.
For his work in helping to eradicate the disease, which is
known as “infant paralysis” because it mainly affects young
children, Dr. Salk was celebrated as the great doctor-
benefactor of his time.
Diana Ross was the lead singer of the vocal group the Supremes,
who became Motown‘s most successful act during the 1960s and
one of the world’s best-selling girl groups of all time.
They remain the best-charting female group in history, with a
total of 12 number-one pop singles on the Billboard Hot 100.
