‘’THE KING OF ROADS” HAS A BIRTHDAY
The Historic Columbia River Highway (U.S. Route 30) turned 100-years-old
Yesterday, June 7th. The Highway runs through the Columbia River Gorge
from Troutdale to The Dalles. It was built in segments and dedicated in 1916
as the nation’s first scenic highway. It functioned as the main road into the
city of Portland from the east until opening of I-84 in the 1960s. The Gorge
highway remains one of America’s most iconic roads.
FORMER OREGON GOVERNOR IS DEAD AT 91
Victor George Atiyeh (February 20, 1923 – July 20, 2014)
The 32nd Governor of Oregon died this evening of renal failure at a hospital
in Portland, after a fall sustained at his home on July 5. Vic Atiyeh served as
governor for eight years from 1979 through 1987. As of this year, Atiyeh is
the last Republican to serve as governor of Oregon.
