On this day in 1945, the 28th Regiment of the Fifth Marine Division of the U.S. Marines reached the top of Mount Surabachi. A photograph of these Marines raising the American flag was taken by American photographer Joe Rosenthal. He received the Pulitzer Prize for his iconic World War ll photograph Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima. it became one of the best-known photos of the war and was actually the second flag raised on that day in 1945.

Joseph John Rosenthal (October 9, 1911 – August 20, 2006)
(Fox News) – Juan Romero, the hotel busboy who sprung to the aid of Robert F. Kennedy the day he was gunned down in Los Angeles in 1968, has died of a heart attack.
According to family members and the Los Angeles, Romero passed away in Modesto Monday morning.
Romero was 17 years old on June 6, 1968, when Kennedy, then a presidential hopeful, gave a speech at the Ambassador Hotel. He was the last person to shake Kennedy‘s hand before he was assassinated.

Woodrow Wilson Guthrie (July 14, 1912 – October 3, 1967)
singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie was one of the most significant figures in American folk music; his songs, including social justice songs, such as "This Land Is Your Land", have inspired several generations both politically and musically. He wrote hundreds of political, folk, and children’s songs, along with ballads and improvised works.
Guthrie died of complications of Huntington’s disease on October 3, 1967. By the time of his death, his work had been discovered by a new audience, introduced to them through Dylan, Pete Seeger, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, his ex-wife Marjorie and other new members of the folk revival, and his son Arlo (below).
Justin Whiting, an eBay shopper in Spalding, U.K., purchased an authentic tintype photo thought to be the earliest known photo of legendary outlaw Jesse James at the young age of 14. After the image was authenticated by forensic experts, it may now be worth thousands or even millions of dollars. The photo was originally bought by Whiting (below) for $10 in July 2017.
