THESE PAST EVENTS ARE TODAY’S HISTORY
THE TOP STORIES THAT MADE HISTORY
On June 3, 1965, 120 miles above the Earth, Major Edward H.
White II opened the hatch of the Gemini 4 and stepped out of
the capsule, becoming the first American astronaut to walk
in space.
Attached to the craft by a 25-foot tether and controlling his
movements with a hand-held oxygen jet-propulsion gun,
White remained outside the capsule for just over 20 minutes.
White had been preceded as a space walker, by Soviet
cosmonaut Aleksei A. Leonov, who on March 18, 1965,
was the first man ever to walk in space.
Astronaut Ed White was the first American to walk in space.

FEEDING TUBE REMOVED ON THIS DAY IN 1990.
Terri Schiavo, the severely brain-damaged woman whose condition sparked an epic legal, medical and political battle
that gripped America, died 13 days after her feeding tube
was removed by the wishes of her husband and the orders
of several courts.

UNTHERED SPACEWALK ON THIS DAY IN 1984
While in orbit 170 miles above Earth, Navy Captain Bruce
McCandless II became the first human being to perform
an untethered spacewalk, when he exits the U.S. space
shuttle Challenger and maneuvers freely, using a bulky
white jet pack of his own design.
McCandless orbited Earth in tangent with the shuttle at
speeds greater than 17,500 miles per hour—the speed
at which satellites normally orbit Earth—and flew up to
320 feet away from the Challenger. After an hour and a
half of testing and flying the jet-powered backpack and
admiring Earth, McCandless safely reentered the shuttle.
