Babe Ruth’s career record by hitting his 715th home run off Los
Angeles left-hander Al Downing in the fourth inning. The Braves
beat the Dodgers 7-4 before a crowd of nearly 54,000.

Hispanic life in America

On April 8, 1993, the space shuttle Discovery lifted off from
the Kennedy Space Center. On board was astronaut
Ellen
Ochoa
, soon to become the first Hispanic woman in space.

Ochoa started at NASA in 1988 after receiving a doctorate
in electrical engineering from Stanford University. Two
years later, she was selected as an astronaut.

On April 7, 1949, the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South
Pacific
opened at the Majestic Theatre on Broadway in New
York City. The romantic musical about World War II, which
touches on controversial racial themes, goes on to run for
almost five years, becoming one of the most popular musicals
of the 1950s.

The show won 10 Tony Awards, and six decades later, its
Lincoln Center revival would earn another seven, making
it the most Tony Award-winning show in New York theater
history.
