ACTRESS ANNE FRANCIS, DEAD AT 80

        Anne Francis died Sunday of natural cause at a nursing home in  
        Santa Barbara, California. She was most remembered for her
        role in the science fiction classic Forbidden Planet (1956). Her
        career began at the early age of eleven on Broadway.

IT WAS A SECRET MEETING ON THIS DATE IN 1970

The meeting between President Nixon, left and Elvis Presley,
right, was requested by Elvis to discuss how the rock star
could help the country fight the growing drug problem. Elvis
suggested that he might be made a “Federal Agent at-large
in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs”. The oval
office visit lasted only 30 minutes.

LIFE OF RILEY ON RADIO MAIN

William Bendix was Chester A. Riley in one of radios
great situation comedies…The Life of Riley. The show
initially aired on the Blue Network, later known as ABC,
from Jan 16, 1944 to June 8, 1945. It then moved to NBC
where it was broadcast from September 8, 1945 until June
29, 1951. Riley and his co-worker Gilles were wing riveters
at the fictional Cunningham Aircraft plant in California.

Riley’s radio family included his wife Peg, played by 
Paula Winslowe and their two children, daughter Babs,
who was played by various actors, and a son named
Jr. played by Tommy Cook. The most memorable
character was Digby (Digger) O’Dell the “Friendly 
Undertaker” portrayed by actor John Brown who
also was Gilles. The series made the transition to
Television in 1949 on NBC.

It was in 1951 that Lawrence Welk, an accordionist and bandleader settled in
Los Angeles, Cal. and soon began producing The Lawrence Welk Show on the local TV station KTLA. It was broadcast from the Aragon Ballroom in Venice Beach. The show became a local hit and was soon picked up by the ABC TV network in June of 1955. Band members were called The Champagne Music Makers and included Accordionist Myron Floren, Violinist Dick Kesner, Guitarist Buddy Merrill and Clarinetist Pete Fountain. The Lennon Sisters were also regulars along with Welk’s dancing partner Norma Zimmer. The Lawrence Welk show aired on Saturday nights until it was cancelled in the Spring of 1971.
