FIRST COMMERCIAL FLIGHT OF A BOEING 747 ON THIS DATE IN 1970

The 747 entered commercial service on January 22, 1970, on Pan Am’s  New York to London route.The flight had been originally planned for the evening of January 21, but an engine overheating problem made that aircraft unstable. Finding a substitute delayed the flight by more than six hours to the following day.

FIRST TV STATION WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI ON THIS DATE IN 1947

Hollywood-based KTLA-TV Channel 5 in Los Angeles, was the first commercially licensed television station west of the Mississippi. It first aired a 30-minute variety show from the Paramount TV theatre starring Bob Hope , Dorothy Lamour, William Bendix and Jerry Colonna. It was estimated that 322 television receivers were in use in Los Angeles at the time.

PAUL STANLEY OF KISS IS 59 TODAY

Paul Stanley,above in makeup, is a hard rock guitarist and singer/songwriter best known for being the rhythm guitarist and primary lead vocalist of the rock band KISS. He is the writer or co-writer of many of the band’s highest-charting hits. Through a mutual friend of Gene Simmons’, Stanley joined Simmons’ band Wicked Lester in the early 1970s.

Wicked Lester soon fell apart and Stanley and Simmons placed ads for a drummer and a guitarist in various New York papers.This resulted in Peter Criss and Ace Frehley joining the group, and they named themselves KISS.The group released their self-titled debut album in February 1974.

In 1967, country star Porter Wagner, seen above with Dolly, invited Parton to join him on his weekly syndicated
TV program The Porter Wagner Show,and also to become a part of his road show.
