The Peace Corps is a  volunteer agency run by the U.S. Government. The mission of 
the Peace Corps includes three goals: providing technical assistance, helping people outside the United States to understand U.S. culture, and Americans to understand
the cultures of other countries. Generally, the work is related to social and economic development. On March 1, 1961,President John F. Kennedy (on the right above)
signed the Executive Order that officially started the Peace Corps. Kennedy then 
appointed his brother-in-law Sargent Shriver (above left) to be the program’s first 
director.

FIRST LIVE TELEVISED NEWS CONFERENCE BY A PRESIDENT ~ ON THIS DATE IN 1961

President John F. Kennedy was the first U.S. president to hold a live televised news conference. He discussed the release of two surviving US Air Force crewman by the Soviet Union after being captured when their jet aircraft was shot down on July 1, 1960. He also talked about an atomic test ban treaty and famine in the Congo.

Lee Harvey Oswald, accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy, was mortally
wounded by Jack Ruby as he was being led from the Dallas police station for transfer
to the county jail.

Tuesday, October 16, 1962…After learning of the presence of missile

bases in Cuba, President John F. Kennedy convened his

 Executive Committee to consider America’s options.

NOTE: The docudrama “Thirteen Day’s” (2000) is a good movie about this event.
