ACTRESS LENA OLIN TURNED 56 TODAY
Lena Olin was born in Stockholm, Sweden and worked as a substitute teacher
and as a hospital nurse before becoming an actress. In 1989, she earned an
Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her work in the
film Enemies, A Love Story, in which she portrayed the survivor of a Nazi war
camp.
FIRST MASTERS GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP ON THIS DATE IN 1934
The first “Augusta National Invitation” Tournament, as the Masters was originally known, was won by Horton Smith of Detroit, Mich. (below). The present name was adopted in 1939. The first tournament was played with current holes 10 through 18 played as the first nine, and 1 through 9 as the second nine, then reversed permanently to its present layout for the 1935 tournament. Smith received a total of $1,500 in prize money.
REESE WITHERSPOON IS 35 YEARS YOUNG TODAY
Reese Witherspoon landed her first feature role as the female lead in the film
The Man in the Moon in 1991; later that year she made her television debut, in
in the cable movie Wildflower. Witherspoon appeared in the critically acclaimed
Election (1999), which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. She was in the
box office hit Legally Blonde in 2001. In 2005, Witherspoon received worldwide
attention and praise for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in Walk the Line,
which earned her an Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Screen
Actors Guild Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
