ORGANIZATION FOUNDED ON THIS DAY IN 1880
The League of American Bicyclists (LAB) is a non-profit membership organization
which promotes cycling for fun, fitness and transportation The League is one of
the largest membership organizations of cyclists in the United States. It was
founded in Newport, Rhode Island on May 30, 1880 as the League of American Wheelmen, it soon became the leading national membership organization for
cyclists in America. The League was also the governing body for amateur
bicycle racing in the U.S. during the late 19th century. Membership peaked
at 103,000 in 1898.
