Demond Wilson, best known for playing Lamont on the 1970s
sitcom “Sanford and Son,” died Friday from complications of
cancer at his home in Palm Springs, California.
In 1984 Wilson was ordained as a minister in the Church of
God in Christ and was an active Christian evangelist for
much of his adult life.

On January 31, 1950, U.S. President Harry S. Truman publicly
announced his decision to support the development of the
hydrogen bomb, a weapon theorized to be hundreds of times
more powerful than the atomic bombs dropped on Japan
during World War II.

On January 31, 1865, the U.S. House of Representatives passed
the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, abolishing slavery in
America.
The amendment read, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude
…shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to
their jurisdiction.”
Several Democrats abstained, but the 13th Amendment was sent
to the states for ratification, which came in December 1865.
With the passage of the amendment, the institution that had
indelibly shaped American history was formally outlawed.
Catherine O’Hara (March 4, 1954 – January 30, 2026)
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Catherine O’Hara, a gifted Canadian
comic actor and “SCTV” alum who starred as Macaulay
Culkin’s harried mother in two “Home Alone” movies and
created the dramatically ditzy character of Moira Rose in
the Emmy-winning comedy “Schitt’s Creek,” died Friday.
O’Hara died at her home in Los Angeles “following a brief
illness,” according to a statement from her agency, Creative
Artists Agency. Further details were not immediately available.
She was 71.

In 1929 The Seeing Eye, the first US school to train guide dogs
for people with vision impairment, opened in Tennessee. For
reporters skeptical of the idea, co-founder Morris Frank
showcased his own dog, Buddy (below) on busy New York
streets.
