The Bank of North America, established by the Continental Congress on
December 31, 1781 and opened on January 7, 1782 in Philadelphia at
the urging of Superintendent of Finance Robert Morris (shown below),
thus becoming the first commercial bank in the United States.The Bank
of North America along with the First Bank of the United States and
The Bank of New York obtained the first shares in the New York
Stock Exchange.
