RADIO SERIES BEGAN ON THIS DAY IN 1943

Land of the Lost
was a radio fantasy adventure, written and narrated by Isabel
Manning Hewson. It was broadcast Saturday mornings at 11:30 am on the ABC
Blue network until September 22, 1945. In 1944, it also was on ABC Tuesdays
at 7:00pm from July 4 until October 3. On October 14, 1945, the series moved
to Mutual, where it was heard until July 6, 1946 (Sundays at 3:30 until mid-
January and then Saturdays at 11:30am). Sponsored by Bosco, Land of the
Lost
aired on ABC from October 11, 1947 until the end of the run on July 3,
1948.

Adam West (William West Anderson) was born in
Walla Walla, Washington.

West is known for his lead role in ABC’s Batman series from
1966 to 1968, and has since returned to provide voices in
various animated superhero series.

AUTHOR BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1850


Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson
(November 13, 1850 – December 3, 1894)

Scottish born author Robert Louis Stevenson wrote the classic adventure
novel Treasure Island, and the psychological thriller The Strange Case of
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
He was a late reader, starting at about age seven
or eight, but he wrote incessantly as a child, even to the discouragement
of his father. He agreed to study law at Edinburgh University to appease
his father, but he continued to pursue a literary career during his young
adulthood.

Margot Kidder and Christopher Reeve in Superman.


Margaret Ruth "Margot" Kidder was born in Canada.

Kidder played Lois Lane alongside Christopher Reeve in
Superman (1978). Her other credits include The Amityville
Horror
(1979) and Black Christmas (1974). She participated
in various plays while attending boarding school.

SERIES LAUNCHED ON THIS DAY IN 1943

 


Land of the Lost
was a radio fantasy adventure, written and narrated by
Isabel Manning Hewson, about the adventures of two children who traveled
underwater with the fatherly fish Red Lantern. The series aired from 1943
to 1948 on the Mutual Broadcasting System and ABC.

Betty Jane Tyler was the voice of the young Isabel, and Ray Ives was the
voice of Billy. Several actors voiced Red Lantern, including Art Carney.The
announcer was Michael Fitzmaurice
, and Cyril Armbrister directed. Organist
Bob Hamilton provided background music.
