Italian explorer Christopher Columbus sighted Watling Island in the Bahamas on this day in 1492. He believed that he had found Asia while attempting to find a Western ocean route to India. The same day he claimed the land for Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain.

On this day in 2002, three bombings shatter the peace in the town of Kuta on the Indonesian island of Bali. The blasts, the work of militant Islamist terrorists, left 202 people dead and more than 200 others injured, many with severe burns.
Luciano Pavarotti (October 12, 1935 – September 6, 2007)
Italian operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti was best known for his performances with Spanish singers Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras. Together, they were given the name The Three Tenors. He debuted as an opera singer in La bohème as Rodolfo in 1961. Pavarotti was the recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2001. He fought a long, tough battle against pancreatic cancer which eventually took his life at age 71.

According to Alan Hanson from his Elvis History Blog, “Those adults who were already convinced that Elvis threatened the morals of the nation’s youth, an album of Christmas songs from him was especially troublesome. For Elvis to sing rock ’n’ roll was bad enough, but for him to step outside that category and into the traditional, religious field of Christmas music was frightening to many”.
Four-time Grammy Award-winning actress and singer Olivia Newton-John gained fame in Grease (1978) and released the double platinum album Physical. She has sold over 100 million records and has released over 10 Top Ten Billboard Hot 100 singles. She formed an all-girl group, Sol Four, with three of her classmates during her teens.
Actor/comedian Bob Newhart starred in The Bob Newhart Show on CBS (1972-1978) as well as the sitcoms Newhart and Bob. He made several appearances on various variety shows, such as The Dean Martin Show, The Ed Sullivan Show, and guest hosted The Tonight Show 87 times. He studied at Loyola Law School but never completed his degree and worked as an accountant.
