Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface. 

On this day in 1969, Apollo 11 astronauts Commander Neil Armstrong and 
lunar Module pilot Edwin E. “Buzz” Aldrin, Jr. became the first men to walk
on the moon.

On this day in 1970, an oxygen tank exploded on Apollo 13, which
prevented the planned moon landing.

The repair dubbed the "mail box" that saved the Apollo 13 astronauts. After an oxygen tank exploded, the three men
had to retreat to the Lunar Module and use duct tape, along
with plastic plastic bags and lithium hydroxide canisters to
build a makeshift CO2 scrubber.

On this day in 1970, Apollo 13 blasted off on a mission to the moon
that was disrupted when an explosion crippled the spacecraft. The
three astronauts onboard consisted of James A. Lovell, Jr., John L. Swigert, Jr., and Fred W. Haise, Jr. All three managed to return
safely to Earth on April 17, six days after launch.
