‘’LUCKY LINDY’’ WAS BORN ON THIS DATE IN 1902

Charles Augustus Lindbergh was an aviator, author, inventor, explorer,and 
social activist. Lindbergh, then a 25-year old U.S. Air Mail pilot, emerged to
almost instantaneous world fame as the result of his  solo non-stop flight on
May 20-21, 1927, from Roosevelt Field on New York’s Long island to Paris,
France, a distance of nearly 3,600 miles in the Spirit of St. Louis, a single-
seat, single-engine monoplane (shown below). Lindberg, who was an
officer in the U.S. Army reserve, was awarded the nations highest
military decoration, the Medal of Honor. He died in 1974 at age 72.

ENGLISH NOVELIST BORN ON THIS DATE IN 1892

J.R.R. (John Ronald Reuel)Tolkien is the author of The Lord
of the Rings trilogy. He was born in Bloemfontein, South
Africa. He died on September 2, 1973. Forbes magazine
ranked Tolkien as the 5th top-earning dead celebrity
in 2009.

RUDYARD KIPLING WAS BORN ON THIS DATE IN 1865

Bombay, India. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in
1907. Kipling is best known for his collection of fiction
stories, The Jungle Book.

FIRST PUBLISHED ON THIS DATE IN 1823

This poem was published anonymously in the Troy (N.Y.) Sentinel.
The author is believed to be Clement Clark Moore. It has been called
”the best known verses ever written by an American” and is largely
responsible for the conception of Santa Claus. Four hand-written
copies of the poem are known to exist, three are in museums and
the fourth copy was signed by Moore as a gift to a friend. It was
sold by a collector in December of 2006 for $280,000.
